i'm fall in this error while upgrading my Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.10 .

trust me! do don't waste your more time on it just do a backup of /var/lib/dpkg/status file then

type sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status

find flashplugin-nonfree block and carefully delete

reboot...
